To work as a pet sitter in California requires registering with the state. As of 2010, there are no federal licensing requirements for pet sitters in the United States. However, a pet sitter can obtain the appropriate documentation to legally operate their business by inquiring with local or county government agencies.
Instructions
1. Register your pet sitting business with the state of California. It should be listed as some type of corporation (i.e., limited liability) for liability protection purposes. Refer to the referenced link from business.gov for file the appropriate permits in your area.
2. Select "General Business Information" for the best business description match on the CalGold home page. The fee may vary. Unfortunately, California does not have a listing to select for pet sitting and there is no special license for it granted by the state. However, private companies offer pet sitting courses and provide certification after completion.
3. Determine the kind of insurance you require as a pet sitter. For example, you may transport the pet to the beach for exercise. Also, pet sitters may have access to homes and other valuables. Therefore, it is important to obtain insurance through a provider that covers more than the value you expect to be liable for. Contact an insurance agent for more information.
4. Paying for the insurance and obtaining an operating permit from the state are sufficient for pet sitters to operate in California. Because there is no formal licensing, pet sitters can have as little or as much protection as they deem necessary to successfully do the job.
