Some dogs are too big to fit comfortably into the cab of a truck.
Letting your dog ride in the cab of your truck can be a distraction, and sometimes there just isn't enough space. Using unsecured kennels or tie downs or allowing your dog to roam free in the bed of the truck can be a recipe for disaster. Building your own dog box and snuggly bolting it to the bed of the truck will ensure your dog's safety on the road. This box comfortably fits dogs up to 80 pounds.
Instructions
1. Cut four pieces of plywood to 32x24 inches for the top, bottom, front and back of the box. Cut two pieces of plywood to 20x24 inches for the sides.
2. Cut out window vents, 12 inches long and 5 inches high on each side. Cut an opening 22 inches high and 10 inches wide in the front piece for a door. Save plywood leftover from the cutouts.
3. Cut steel mesh vents measuring one inch larger than the window cutouts. Saw a frame for each window from additional plywood. Cover the inside of each window with steel mesh and screw the frames around the edges.
4. Attach the front to the sides by screwing 1x3-inch pine strapping to the inside corners. Reinforce outside joints with strapping.
5. Make a door out of the leftover plywood from Step 2. Cut an 8x5-inch center out of the plywood to create a frame. Cut a piece of steel mesh one inch larger and attach it to the back. Screw strapping around the edges of the steel mesh to secure it. Attach a hinge to the left side of the door and attach it to the box. Add a latch to the right side.
6. Use screws to attach the roof. Paint or stain the wood. Add bedding material.
7. Drill holes into the bed of the truck. Bolt the dog box to the truck.
