Animal Questions & Solutions

Understand how animals function by finding out the answers to some basic questions about their lifestyle.

Animals are something that interest many people. Whether you're writing a report for school or are just gathering information to satisfy your own curiosity, there are certain aspects of every animal that are important to understand. Children can greatly benefit from learning about animals -- understanding how animals function helps kids know interact around pets and other animals they may encounter in life. Listed here are certain questions about animals.

What Do Animals Look Like?

The features of an animal can help set it apart from another. When answering this question, go into detail about the animal's size, hair or skin color, eyes, tail or fins, for example. Be as descriptive as possible. Explain why certain features help set this animal apart from others. For example, many people think wolves and dogs look alike. Wolves are wild and, therefore, if you're in the woods, it's important to recognize whether you've encountered a stray dog or a wolf.

What Do Animals Eat?

An animal's diet can also set it apart from other animals. Research what exactly your animal eats, whether there are any restrictions in its diet and figure out how it finds its food. Find out how often it has to eat and how often it needs to hunt. Determine whether the animal hunts or feeds off of vegetation or dead animals. Explore the food chain around this animal -- figure out where it lies in the food chain and determine who is hunting it. Answering this question will give you a lead into figuring out how this animal lives on a day-to-day basis.

Where Do Animals Live?

Find out where and how the animal lives. Figure out if it's more comfortable indoors or outdoors, whether it stays in the same place every night or if it moves around, and whether it makes its own home or takes shelter in an existing building or covered area. Find out if the animal lives alone or in a pack. This will give you an idea of how social the animal is and help lead to the next question about defense.

How Do Animals Defend Themselves?

It's very important to understand how the animal you are researching defends itself. This is equally important whether you are researching a dog you may get as a pet or a wild animal. Find out if the animal is easily agitated, whether it defends itself aggressively or not, and, especially if it is a potential pet, what you should do if your animal is trying to defend itself. For example, a dog may get very possessive around a bone or other personal item, so it's important to first understand how it will defend itself if threatened. You'll then be prepared for what to expect and can learn respond.
