A simple steel carport can provide excellent protection during heavy storms.
A steel carport is not the most aesthetically pleasing structure, but it is a low-cost and durable place to shelter your car from the elements. The large steel panel that protects the car can be heavy, so your biggest challenge may be finding four to eight people who are willing to help you raise the roof.
Instructions
1. Ask your local building or zoning office if you need a permit to build a carport. You may want to check with your homeowner's association, as well. It is easier and far less frustrating to first ask permission, than it is to take down a steel carport later.
2. Dig four 2-foot-deep post holes, 8 feet apart from each other. Place the posts in the holes. Mix the cement according to manufacturer directions, and pour it into the holes. Make the two rear posts about 6 inches lower than the two front posts. Use the plumb bob to make sure each pair of posts align properly. Let the concrete dry for 24 hours, at least.
3. Find at least three friends to help lift the steel panel on top of the poles. You should place a sturdy ladder at each corner. The panel will be heavy. The sun may heat the panel, and the edges may be sharp, so make sure everyone wears thick work gloves.
4. Set the panel on top of the posts. Drill a hole for the bolts that connect the panel to the posts. After adding washers to prevent fasteners from coming loose, use a screwdriver or ratchet to screw the bolts tight into each corner.
5. If your fasteners are not galvanized, apply an all-weather sealant atop the bolts to prevent water from causing rust.
