Get Training in Elderly Care


Career opportunities in elder care are exploding, as the baby boomer generation begins to turn 60 years of age and older. Whether you want to work in a hospital, nursing home or hospice, or have an interest in managing programs at a senior center, positions should be plentiful in this field. If you are compassionate, patient and hardworking, providing care for seniors may be the job for you.

Formal training and hands-on time with the elderly are key.


1. Decide in what capacity you want to work with the elderly. You can engage in elderly care in a variety of ways: as a social worker, doctor, nurse or certified nurse's assistant, as an activities director in an assisted living facility or in other capacities. Research your options and talk to others in a field you may be considering.


2. Research schools that offer education and training in the focus area of your choice. Visit the schools you are considering and ask about on-the-job training opportunities, graduation requirements and financial aid. 3. Volunteer at a hospital, nursing home, senior center or hospice. Volunteering will provide you with an opportunity to interact with elderly patients, families and medical staff and to spend time in a medical or senior facility. You will receive valuable training. Volunteering will also give you the chance to find out if working with the elderly is really the career choice for you before you commit to a full-time position.


4. Help care for an elderly relative or neighbor. Assisting in the care of a relative, friend or neighbor will provide you with considerable training in elderly care. Offer to spend an afternoon or evening with that person once or twice a week and ask thorough questions about providing for their well-being in that time frame. If a visiting nurse is involved, ask her about the job responsibilities, the hours and the expectations.
