Design With Shipping Containers

Fruit shipping crates make effective shelves when hung on walls.

Shipping containers are cost-effective items for decorating. They vary in size, weight and material. Shipping containers can refer to small containers such as wooden crates used to ship wines or vegetables, or intermodel steel building units used to ship large items such as cars or airplane parts. Depending upon your need and creativity, shipping containers can be worked into almost any design of your home--or a shipping container can become your home. Once you get the hang of shipping containers' versatility, you may view shipping containers from a new perspective.

Instructions

The Plastic Crate Shipping Container

1. Plastic shipping crates make sturdy shelves.

Plastic shipping crates are usually used for shipping milk or juice. Ask your grocer about these. Usually grocers are generous about giving away extra plastic shipping crates. Protect your work area with a sheet before painting them.

2. Gather your plastic crates. Paint in a well-ventilated area. Spray paint the crates in the color that you desire. Paint all sides, taking care to paint into all of the grooves. You can paint the crates with a glow-in-the dark spray paint as toy boxes for a child's room.

3. Use the top of the crates to display lightweight items.

Modular Construction Shipping Containers

4. Intermodal Steel Building Unit

Design a home with an ISBU--an Intermodal Steel Building Unit--also known as a shipping container. These container homes are growing in use. They are earthquake, hurricane, tornado and fire proof. They are the strongest container for home building possible. You can use these very large container units when the construction design is being built.

5. Consider placing two large shipping containers side-by-side with a door connecting them. Decorate with contemporary furniture with upholstery featuring horizontal lines to give the container home a more spacious visual effect. Use a flat screen television to save space.

6. Decorate containers that are built into a home as you would any other home style with accessories such as lamps, textured pillows and scented candles for ambiance. Place runners on the floor to give the floor a lengthier illusion.

Fruit and Wine Shipping Containers

7. Shipping containers for fruits and vegetables can be left natural or painted.

Clean a fruit crate that is in good condition. Place it on a place mat in the center of a kitchen table. Fill it with potted plants or candles.

8. Hang wine crates to use as cabinets in a kitchen, workroom, garden shed or sun room. Hang these with a hammer and nail.

9. Stack wine crates together from the floor on a porch or in a workroom and connect them near the crate corners with wood screws and collars to make effective cabinets.

10. Place wine crates atop desks, entertainment centers or tables to use as bookshelves.
