Breed Yorkies

Yorkies are one of the very smallest of all dog breeds. They are prized for their small size and their huge personality. When breeding pure-bred dogs, it's important to choose dogs that are close to the breed standard and are free of genetic defects. Breeding Yorkies with health problems can introduce problems into the breed as a whole.

Instructions

1. Look for dogs that have successfully bred before or who are at least 18 months old. This is generally enough time for any health problems to have surfaced. It is also enough time for the female to have had at least one estrus. The second estrus is considered to be the earliest time that a dog should be bred.

2. Watch the female for signs of being in heat. The estrus time in a Yorkie will be noticeable by a vulva that is swollen to a larger size. It will also discharge blood occasionally. Some Yorkies will also have a change in temperament.

3. Wait until the female has been noticeably in heat for about 10 days before breeding her. This will mean that the female is in the part of her cycle when she is fertile. If the female is not willing to be mounted, she is probably not yet fertile. Female Yorkies will not want to mate before they have entered their fertile time.

4. Allow the male and female Yorkie together once the fertile time has been reached. If the female is willing, and both dogs are healthy, they will both know what they’re supposed to do. If the female becomes pregnant, her vulva swelling will not go away after her cycle is finished. The bleeding will have stopped but the vulva will still be engorged. If this happens, the dog should be taken to the vet for prenatal care.
