Residents of Delaware who own a dog that is six months or older must have the dog licensed. Pricing for licensing is lower for dogs that have been spayed or neutered. Before moving forward to get the license, you must first have your dog vaccinated against rabies. Once you have your dog vaccinated, the vet will provide you with proof of vaccination both in writing and with a collar tag. If your vet does not offer pet licensing services, with paper-proof of current vaccination, you have several options to obtain the license, including going in person to the Fish and Wildlife office in Dover or to some stores throughout the state. Check the link under Resources (below) to see a listing of businesses (licensing agents) that issue dog licenses. Another way to get a dog license in Delaware is to use the state's online service.
Instructions
1. By going online to get your dog's license, you save time and travel expense driving. To get started, click the "Get Dog License Online" link under Resources (below). The first page of the process reminds you that you need the proof of current rabies vaccination.
2. Next, you will see a page offering you several purchasing options based on duration of the license (1 to 3 years), and whether or not your dog has been sterilized. Click the box next to the option you want and a pop-up box will direct you to print a sample license. You will need to confirm that the page printed.
3. You will confirm that you have a valid rabies certificate and fill out a form about your dog (age, breed, sex, etc) and your name and address. With 10 days of completing the information online, you will receive the metal dog tag in the mail, ready to add to your dog's collar.
