The Maltese is a popular purebred small dog. They weigh ten pounds or less and are great companions for people who live in apartments. They are loyal--but protective--so they are known to bark to alert to the presence of strangers. Because of their small size, this is not the dog for a family with small children since the dog is easily injured. Even small purebred dogs like the Maltese need to be rescued from St. Louis area shelters and families that can no longer care for them.

1. Foster a Maltese for a purebred rescue group. Rescue groups save dogs from shelters and families that need to find new homes. They rely upon foster homes to provide a safe haven for the dog until an adoptive family is found. Many rescue groups pay for veterinary care and food while the dog is in the foster home. 2. Contact your veterinarian, groomer or kennel operator. Families who need to find new homes for their pets often ask their veterinarians for help. Let your pet care professional know that you want to rescue a Maltese.
3. Visit St. Louis area animal shelters. There are thousands of dogs in St. Louis shelters that need homes. Even Maltese and Maltese mixes are euthanized because they are homeless. Rescuing a dog from a shelter saves a life.
4. Offer to foster a Maltese for an all breed dog rescue group. All breed rescues take in dogs based on need, not breed background. These rescues usually operate through a foster home network. Contact an all breed rescue near your home and let them know that you are interested in rescuing Maltese dogs.
5. Post an offer to take in a Maltese on craigslist.com. There is an active St. Louis pet community on craigslist. People who need to find homes for their pets post information on the pet community about their pet. Either watch Craigslist for an available Maltese or post an offer to rescue one. Do not pay a large “rehoming” fee to anyone claiming that they are giving up a dog. Breeders violate Craigslist rules by claiming they are placing rescue pets.
