Build Dog Runs With Cement Blocks

A dog run can help keep your dog safe while outside.

All dogs need time outdoors off-leash, to experience the pleasure and independence of roaming free. A dog run is a closed-off area where your dog can run and play without being on a leash. If you don't have a fenced-in back yard, consider building a dog run where your pooch can get the exercise he needs without the expense and hassle of fencing in your entire yard.

Instructions

1. Decide where to place your dog run. The dog run should be near enough to your house that you can look out the window to check on your dog. You should also place it near a hose to make cleaning out the dog run easier.

2. Purchase or obtain square cement blocks to use as the floor of your dog run. They should be approximately 4 inches thick and made of smooth concrete. Be sure the blocks are not too slippery for your dog.

3. Clear a space in your yard for the dog run. While all dogs should get at least 50 square feet of space, larger, more active dogs require between 75 and 100 square feet. The space should be flattened dirt, dug to create a consistent slope (1/4 inch every foot) that will help with drainage.

4. Place the concrete blocks along the ground in the space you have set aside. Each block should be touching the next, creating a consistent, flat floor for your dog.

5. Surround the cement blocks with a nine-gauge steel chain-link fence, which is the most durable option for your dog. The fence should be approximately 6 to 8 feet high, depending on the size of your dog.

6. Create a gutter in the ground at the lowest end of the dog run. Since the dog run is sloped, the rain will carry any messes your dog has made into the gutter for easier cleanup.

7. Install a gate, made out of the same material as the fence, that only opens from the outside, ensuring your dog cannot unlatch it and get loose.
