Variations Of Dog Fencing

Dog fences will help keep your dog safe

There are many types of dog fences. When considering what kind of fence to buy you have to ask yourself a few questions. Does your dog jump high? Is he or she energetic? Do you need a lot of space to run? You also need to determine the budget for your fence project before deciding on the type of fence you want. The most common fences are wooden, chain link and invisible.

Wood Fences

There are several options in wood dog fences including the spaced dog ear fence and the solid dog ear fence. These are both picket style fences. Split rail fences do not make effective dog fences because a dog can easily escape through one. The height of the fence should be determined by the size of the dog. You can go as low as a knee-high garden fence if you own a small dog that does not jump.

Dog ear fences are the fences with the picket tops cut off at an angle, so they look like dog ears. The spaced dog ear fence is one with spaces between each picket. Typically the space is the same width as the picket. This style fence allows wind to pass through. It also allows the dog to see out, and for others to see in. The solid dog ear fence is one with no spaces. The pickets or boards are installed close together so they are touching. This style is better for dogs that may be able to squeeze out between the pickets, or to protect the dog from people on the outside sticking things through the fence.

The disadvantages to wood dog fences is that dogs who dig and can escape by digging a hole below the fence. Wood fences also require a higher degree of maintenance that chain link or invisible fences.

Chain Link Fences

Chain link fences are relatively easy to install, and require little maintenance. One of the advantages of a chain link fence is that a portion of the fence can be buried into the ground when installed, which can prevent dogs from digging under the fence. Chain link fences allow air to flow freely, yet the openings are not large enough for even small dogs to squeeze through. Although silver is the most common color for a chain link fence, they can be purchased or ordered in other colors. If you want the convenience of a chain link fence, but more privacy, you can have the chain link filled with flexible plastic strips in a variety of colors. This prevents the fence from being completely see through.

Invisible Fences

There are two parts to an electric dog fence: a wire that is buried along the perimeter of the "fenced in" area and a pet-collar with a receiver. The underground wire transmits a signal that makes the pet-collar beep, if the pet comes too close to the electric dog fence perimeter. A mild electric shock will also be applied.

The advantages of an invisible fence include the fact that you won’t have a visible fence, which makes them especially nice to use in the front yard. They are easy to install, and can be installed without the help of a professional. Training a dog on an invisible fence is also simple, and the fence will come with training instructions.

The disadvantages of an invisible fence are that it doesn’t always work and dogs can jump over them. The electric shock the dog receives is just enough to get the dog’s attention; it won’t actually physically prevent them from jumping the fence. If a dog takes of running, possibly after another animal, it can run right over the invisible fence. Once the dog passes the perimeter, it will not be shocked continuously. The second disadvantage is that the transmitter only goes a few feet. This means that if you have a larger dog that could jump a five or six foot fence, it can jump over the invisible fence without receiving a shock.
