Visit Hawaii With Pets

Bringing your pets to Hawaii requires careful planning.

Taking your pet to Hawaii is not an easy process. It's not like traveling within the continental United States. Hawaii has very specific and strict policies when it comes to entering the state with pets. You need to be fully prepared, or the quarantine process could take much longer than the mandatory five days required by Hawaii law. Learning everything you can and getting all of your documents in order before traveling will make the trip much easier on you and your pet.

Instructions

1. Make sure your pet meets Hawaii's rabies vaccination requirements. He needs to have had two up-to-date rabies shots. One of the rabies shots needs to have been given to your pet within the 90-day period before you arrive in Hawaii. The other shot needs to have been given to your pet within the last 12 months if it was a one-year vaccine shot, or during the last 18 months if it was a three-year vaccine shot. Have documented proof of all these vaccines.

2. Get a microchip implantation for your pet. This implantation is for identification purposes. Record your pet's microchip number.

3. Provide the results of a blood serum test for rabies antibodies. This blood sample needs to be taken at least 120 days before you enter Hawaii. Have documentation ready with the test date and results.

4. Be prepared to pay for the Hawaii quarantine program. Your pet will need to be quarantined for five days, and the cost is $224. If you fail to meet Hawaii's requirements, your pet will require either the 30-day quarantine, which costs $655, or the 120-day quarantine, which costs $1,080.

5. Ask your veterinarian to treat your pet for ticks with a long-lasting flea product. This treatment needs to take place within 14 days of arriving in Hawaii, and you'll need to have documented proof.
