Animal Diet Jobs

Are you interested in a career working with animals? Would you like a job in agriculture that does not involve working on a farm? Maybe you would like to work in a scientific field that has an impact on the well being of farm animals, zoo animals, or wildlife. If any of these are true, a job in animal nutrition may be for you.

Educational Requirements

At this time, there is no one specific degree required to work in animal nutrition. A strong background in the sciences is necessary. There are undergraduate and graduate degrees in animal nutrition and animal science in the agriculture department of many colleges and universities. The career you hope to have will determine what level of education you need.

Jobs in Animal Feed Production

There are several different opportunities when working in a feed production facility. Scientists in these facilities work to develop and formulate feeds that meet the needs of animals everywhere. Since each animal on a farm or in a zoo has specific nutritional needs, there is always need for scientists to formulate feed. There are also plant opportunities from production to facility management.

Jobs in Animal Nutrition Sales

If you would like to work in the field of animal nutrition, but are not interested in production or working directly with animals, a career in sales may be what you are looking for. A salesman for animal feed production companies is responsible for staying educated about the products his company produces. You will work closely with your customers to learn the needs of their facility and the animals they care for. Some potential customers are zoos, dairy farms, livestock farms, parks that contain animals, agriculture supply stores and private owners. This is a great way to have an impact on the well being of animals even if you are not suited for a hands on career in animal care.

Jobs in Animal Care

For someone who loves animals, an animal nutrition job working directly with the animals is the most rewarding career. An animal nutritionist works directly with the animals and other caretakers to keep the animals happy and healthy. You will control the diet and monitor the dietary needs of the animals at a zoo, horse farm, dairy farm, livestock farm, animal preserve, kennel, animal clinic or shelter. There are also private animal owners who employ animal nutritionists for consulting. Any facility that houses animals can be a potential employer.

Jobs in Research and Education

A post graduate degree in a related animal nutrition or animal science field will also give you the opportunity to work in a research or educational role. Colleges and universities may employ you as a teacher or researcher in the agriculture or animal science department. There are also educational and research opportunities with governmental, international and private agencies that monitor and develop products for animal health.
