Doghouses Versus Crates

A dog crate is a structure that vaguely resembles a cage.

Dog crates and cages are both structures that can temporarily house a dog. There are extreme differences in use, purpose and appearance that make these two canine supplies very different.

Use

Dog crates are commonly used in the training of dogs, whereas a dog house is used to provide temporary shade and shelter.

Location

By virtue of their purpose, most dog crates are used indoors, while most dog houses are outdoor structures.

Appearance

Crates may be made of metal and resemble a cage. In some cases, crates are made from a hard plastic and may look like a large box. Dog houses tend to mimic the appearance of houses.

Fortification

Crates are equipped with a locking door that allows the owner of the dog to keep the dog within the confines of the crate. Dog houses often have no such accommodation. Some dog houses are, however, equipped with a flap style "doggy door" to keep out the elements.

Fun Fact

Dogs in the wild are animals that create dens. The structured nature of both crates and dog houses mimics the properties of a den, allowing the dog to feel safe, comfortable and at ease.
