It is not only an holistic approach, but also a cost-effective one and is usually learned by pet owners or veterinarians. This technique may be offered as a major, minor or course in education institutions. Animal massage training is beneficial for occupations within kennels, grooming shops or dog training facilities. Pennsylvania schools that teach this method specialize in holistic medicine, message therapy and animal massage. There are a limited number of animal massage schools in the country. Pennsylvania institutions offer courses on animal massage or online courses and out-of-state colleges may be completed by residents of the state.

National Academy of Massage Therapy and Healing Sciences
The National Academy of Massage Therapy and Healing Sciences in Montgomery County, Pennsylvania, specializes in professional massage and reflexology. The academy combines medical and holistic aspects of these disciplines, encouraging students to develop self-awareness and personal growth in addition to formal education. The massage therapy diploma program includes lectures, demonstrations, hands-on training and a supervised practicum. The practicum may focus on one of 21 topics. Animal massage is an option requiring students to bring their pet dogs to class. Students learn the basics of canine anatomy and practice basic animal massage principles and techniques.

Northwest School of Animal Massage
The Northwest School of Animal Massage (NWSAM) offers animal massage certification courses in maintenance, performance and rehabilitation. Although the school is based in Falls City, Washington, course work is completed on-line and students gain hands-on experience through five-day practicals within one of NWSAM's two Pennsylvania facility locations. These facilities are located in Philadelphia and Horsham, outside of Philadelphia. Other programs include one and two day seminars and workshops in the areas of aromatherapy, reiki, shiatsu and acupressure for animals. Faculty members of NWSAM are all professionals in the field with teaching experience.
