The cairn terrier has its origins in the Scottish Highlands as a small terrier bred specifically to hunt vermin in the rock piles or cairns of Scotland. This lively breed was most likely derived 200 years ago from several small terriers then prevalent to the region. The cairn is a confident, intelligent breed that makes as good a companion to an urban apartment dweller as it does to the owner of a rural farm.
