Boar Hunting in Europe
The German hunting terrier is the most commonly used dog in boar hunting in Europe. While boar hunting is common in most European countries, it is especially popular in eastern European countries like Poland and Germany.
European Hunting Seasons
Many Europeans hunt in Poland, where the hunting season is April 1 to February 28. The flats of the Carpathian Mountains in Romania have a hunting season from August 1 to January 31. In the Ukraine, known for its monster boar, hunting is September 1 to January 31.
Time and Location
Boars are not often hunted in the daylight. Hunting occurs on moonlit nights when snow cover enhances chances significantly. Hunting boar in daylight is only productive in remote locations. Boar live in woods, swamps and mountainous areas, and along riverbeds in reeds.
Dog Selection and Training
The terrier to be used in boar hunting can begin training at three to six months of age. It must be bred to hunt wild pigs. Alternatives to the terrier are dachshunds and an occasional mongrel with short legs.
Hunting Method
In what is called the driven shoot, hunters, beaters and dogs position themselves around a know boar locations to corral the animal. The beaters and dogs make a great deal of noise forcing the boar toward the hunters.
