The goal of a good breeder is always to improve the breed.
The American pit bull terrier is an old, carefully designed breed. It doesn't deserve its reputation for viciousness; as the breed was uncompromisingly bred to be absolutely gentle with people. Some of the unfortunate reputation is due to unethical breeders. Good breeders have improvement of the breed as their first goal. Quality breeders also show their dogs in conformation. Dog shows are not about whether the dog is pretty. The purpose of the conformation ring is judging the dogs that are fit for breeding, those that best meet the standards of their breed. All others should be neutered. The conformation standard is a health, temperament and physical standard meant to describe the qualities needed for the work the dog was meant to do.
Instructions
1. Research the American pit bull terrier breed and genetics completely. If you want to produce quality puppies, you cannot neglect this part, even if you are only keeping a stud. Lack of knowledge or careless neglect contributes heavily to overpopulation, poor temperament and heritable diseases, and the pit bull breed suffers greatly from those problems. Breeders must know their breed's lines fully, as well as other breeders' lines, in order to improve the breed instead of harming it. The stud owner bears as much responsibility as the owner of the bitch.
2. Take your dog to the veterinarian for a thorough examination, letting the vet know you plan to offer the dog at stud. The examination should include a test for the bacteria brucella canis, which is sexually transmitted in dogs and causes the disease brucellosis. Brucellosis is serious. It causes miscarriages in dogs and can be spread to people through a dead puppy fetus. It causes health problems in male dogs as well. Test your dog before every breeding, even if the test was negative for the last female.
3. Contact the American Pit Bull Terrier Club in your state to find out the requirements to join and any health approvals that members are required to provide for their dogs. A reputable breeder should be a member in good standing of both the national and state breed clubs. Although it is a fairly hardy breed, pit bulls are susceptible to immune-related demodectic mange.
4. Select the bitch. Research the health and lineage of the bitch as carefully as you check your own dog. Ask to see the pedigree and veterinary records; do not take the owner's word. True champion lines have almost all champions listed on the pedigree, especially the closest relatives, so do not be swayed by a pedigree that shows a handful of champions. As an inexperienced owner of a stud, select a bitch owned by a highly experienced, quality breeder of champions. An experienced breeder can help match your stud to the most complementary female as well as helping with the breeding process, which can damage the stud if not done carefully.
5. Breed the dogs two or three times if possible, with a day or two between each time. Opinions vary as to the preferred days of the female's cycle to breed, but usually between the ninth and 14th days she'll be willing to accept the male.
6. Supervise the breeding closely so the dogs are not injured. The male or the female can injure the other either accidentally or intentionally. Also, the male swells inside the female and they are tied together for up to 30 minutes. If the dogs are left alone during this time the male can be injured as the pair struggle to get free.
