As the negative connotations associated with pit bulls diminish, many dog owners are enjoying the benefits of sharing their lives with this companionable dog. Red nose pit bull puppies are common, and there are no discernible behavioral or physiological differences that can be determined by the dogs' nose color. Origins


Pit bull puppies are born with strong bodies and companionable personality traits. It is the dogs' muscular build and extreme desire to please that make it the breed so appealing to those who breed dogs for fighting. But fighting must be taught and is not the breed's instinctive nature. Red nose pit bulls originated in Ireland as companion dogs and are direct descendants of the Old Family Red Nose strain. John Sullivan, world renown boxer of the late 1800s, is said to have brought the first red nose pit bull to America.


Physical Description


A pit bull puppy is born with a broad head and wide-set cheeks to support a powerful jaw. The pit bull's large head is connected to a well-defined, muscular neck. The dog's back and chest are also especially muscular, and its body is supported by strong, agile legs from birth. While the average weight of this dog varies, full-grown pit bulls usually range between 35 to 55 lbs. Pit bulls stand 18 to 22 inches tall at maturity.


General Health


Born into a litter of 5 to10 puppies, pit bulls are a healthy breed. Depending on genealogy, some are susceptible to hip dysplasia, congenital heart disease and hereditary cataracts. These dogs have an average life span of 12 years and should be exercised daily to maintain optimum health.


Pit bull puppies have minimum grooming requirements and should be bathed every two to three months. Its eyes and ears should be checked weekly and can be cleaned with baby wipes between baths. The dog's nails should be trimmed every month, with only the tips removed, as recommended by groomers.


Temperament


Pit bull puppies are very outgoing, curious and playful. They have good-natures and are extremely loyal and affectionate, says Dog Breed Info. Pit bulls make excellent family pets and are good with children and are obedient and eager to please. It's a courageous and intelligent guard dog. Pit bull puppies show an immediate protective nature and will guard their space with veracity. It is a friendly dog, but has an instinctual ability to gauge and react defensively to potential danger. Pit Bull Rescue Central (PBRC) advises, "Because of the breed's undeserved negative media image, pit bull owners have to be even more careful and responsible than the average dog owner." PBRC volunteers agree that pit bulls are gaining respect as loyal family companions.
