Animal Reproduction Jobs

Animal breeders help ensure that farm animals, including cattle, successfully reproduce.

Those who aspire to a career in animal reproduction must first complete several years of study in animal science, animal reproduction, nutrition and habitat, according to the Education Portal website. Select veterinary colleges, universities and distance learning programs offer degree programs for those interested in becoming animal breeders, behaviorists or research technicians.

Breeder

Animal breeders ensure the healthful reproduction of a variety of species, including dogs, cats, cows, horses, sheep, pigs and chickens. According to the Career Planner website, animal breeders artificially inseminate animals by manually inducing ejaculation in males and injecting the prepared semen in female animals. Breeders examine the animals for any illness or injury that might affect reproduction. They also keep accurate records of birth intervals, semen specimens, diet, growth rates and pedigree.

Research Technician

Laboratory research technicians can specialize in small animals and livestock, which will require them to breed animals for medical tests and research. According to the StateUniversity.com website, research technicians work with mice, rats, guinea pigs, cats, chickens, monkeys, and dogs. Although many are self-employed, technicians work for drug companies, universities, hospitals and medical laboratories. The nature of the work involves research studies that track the genetics, nutrition, reproduction, growth and development of farm animals and small mammals.

Behaviorist

According to the Bioscience Careers website, animal behaviorists study the what and why of animal behavior. Reproduction is one area of study, along with how animals choose mates, care for their offspring and avoid predators. Animal behaviorists can study fish, birds or mammals. Behaviorists work in zoos, research labs, animal shelters and veterinary hospitals.
