Make Gourmet Gift Baskets For Fundraising

Making gift baskets for fundraisers is one of those tasks that sounds easy and fun until the real work begins, and then frustration can take over. Fear not, for the fun can be reinserted into fund-raising projects by simply taking a few deep breaths and following these steps.

Instructions

The Planning

1. Start at least six months before the event. You need time for volunteers to delegate responsibilities, contact vendors and sponsors and advertise throughout the community.

2. Brainstorm themes that address a wide range of interests so that, no matter how diverse the audience, there will be something to pique everyone's interest.

3. Create catchy titles that encompass the theme and contents of each prize. For example, popular basket themes include: "Sports Fan," "Movie Lover," "Beach Baby," "Bookworm," "Cooking Delight," "Romantic Rendezvous" and "Environmentally Friendly."

4. Divide up the themes among the volunteers and ask them to solicit appropriate contributions.

SPORTS FAN

5. Many sports teams work hand-in-hand with charities. Write proposal/request letters to local sports teams, asking if them to donate items from key chains and bumper stickers to tickets or autographed memorabilia. Ask local sporting goods stores to donate gift certificates.

6. Collect some imaginative containers. For example, for a baseball theme, use a mitt. For football, use a helmet or a large trophy.

7. Embellish the gift baskets with sports additions: packets of peanuts, certificates to a free session at a local batting range, football party favors, and pennants.

Movie Lover

8. Contact local movie theaters to request gift certificates.

9. Start with a large theater-style popcorn container.

10. Stack the basket with microwaveable popcorn and the kinds of candy available in movie theaters.

Beach Baby

11. Solicit gift certificates for beach wear, swimsuits, or restaurants with nautical themes.

12. Start with a standard metal pail. Layer sand and seashells on the bottom. Add beach accessories, such as a plastic shovel or toy snorkel.

13. Include nail polish in colors such as "Sea Ya Later, Sailor" or "Azure for Sure."

Environmentally Friendly

14. Contact local eco-friendly stores to ask for donations.

15. Get a brown paper bag from the local grocery store. Fill the bag with maps for nature trails, organic candles, a copy of Henry David Thoreau's "Walden Pond" and a pack of flower seeds of choice.

16. Add environmentally responsible cleaning products.
