Build Small Dog Runs

When you have a dog, it's important that it gets plenty of exercise. For many breeds this also means plenty of time outdoors for you and the dog, taking long walks or spending time in the yard. If you don't have a fenced yard or you want a more controlled space for your dog, build a dog run that provides both control and shelter for the dog.

Instructions

1. Design your dog run. Although no dog should be left in his run indefinitely, the run should be in a spot that provides both sunshine and shade, and is protected from wind and rain if necessary. Put the run in relation to your house so you can supervise your dog while he's outside.

2. Measure out an area of 8 feet by 13 feet for a small dog run, and pound stakes into the ground around the perimeter. Then nail boards to the stakes to frame the area. Mix concrete in a large bucket, per the directions, and pour it into your frame. Allow the concrete to cure for an hour, then brush the surface with a broom to make the surface rougher, so your dog is able to grip it. Allow 23 hours of additional drying time.

3. Buy your kennel kit from a store instead of building one from scratch. Pre-packed kennel kits require some construction, but they come with specifically manufactured parts that will save you money in the long run. Make sure you buy a kit that fits the slab you've just poured. Put the kennel together according to the directions, using the tools it specifies. Start with the back of the structure and secure one of the sides. Move on to the other side, then the front, then the top. Make sure all the connections are tight and secure, and will not fall apart when and if your dog jumps on it.

4. Supply your run with food and water in dishes, a preformed dog house, toys and blankets for your dog. If it's going to be spending much time in the dog run, you should make it as comfortable and entertaining as possible.
