Kill Demodex Mites

Demodex mites are parasites that can live in the hair of dogs, cats and humans. When demodex mites appear on your pet, it is often called mange. When they are present on humans, the mites can cause skin conditions such as rosacea. There are several products that contain essential oils that kill demodex mites on humans as well as help heal other skin diseases. There are a few ways of killing demodex mites on dogs and cats, too.

Instructions

1. Ivermectin--also called stromectol, mectizan and ivomec--is a treatment for skin problems such as rosacea or demodecicosis. Ivermectin kills various parasites, including demodex mites. You will need a prescription from your doctor for ivermectin and you will need to take it orally at least one hour before a meal with 8 oz. of water. Ivermectin can be given by injection to your dog or cat, but the veterinarian will have to do it. If you give ivermectin to your pet orally, you will need to follow the vet's directions.

2. You can use tea tree oil to kill demodex mites. Tea tree oil is an essential oil that is used most often for healing cuts and burns. It comes from leaves from Australia's melaluca tree, and has antiseptic properties. You can find it in topical treatments that can be bought online and in your local health store or pharmacy. It is also included in oral-hygiene products, skin lotions and shampoos that can help kill demodex mites on humans. This treatment is not recommended for animals.

3. The berries of the seabuckthorn plant can provide oil or be eaten. The oil is used to treat burns and aging issues of the skin. It also kills parasites, including demodex mites. The plant grows in Europe, and the seabuckthorn oil is sold in pill and liquid form all over the world and on the Internet. It is also included in shampoos, skin creams and soaps. Seabuckthorn oil can be used for humans, but not dogs or cats.

4. Spread elimite cream that contains permethrin on the infected area. Permethrin can kill demodex mites and keep them from returning. You will need a prescription from your doctor for the cream, as it can cause a reaction in some people. It should not be used to kill demodex mites on your pet.

5. Give mitaban to your dog or cat to kill the demodex mites. This requires a prescription, and it will need to be given every other week up to eight weeks. At the end of this time, take your pet back to the veterinarian for another checkup to make sure the demodex mites are gone. If not, you will need to continue with the treatment.
