Just How Much Do Trainers Get Compensated

Some dog trainers specialize in competition training.


The Bureau of Labor Statistic estimates that 20 percent of animal care and service workers specialize in animal training, with dogs being among the most common animals trained. Dog trainers may train dogs for shows, competitions or becoming service animals.


Salary


According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, the mean salary for animal trainers, as of 2009, was $31,080 annually. This is an average hourly wage of $14.94.


Top-paying States


According to 2009 BLS data, the top-paying states for animal trainers were, in order, Delaware, Minnesota, Washington, Connecticut and Kentucky. Annual wages in those states ranged from $37,500 in Delaware to $34,410 in Kentucky.


Top-paying Cities


Hartford, Connecticut, was the top-paying metropolitan area as of 2009, with animal trainers there earning an average of $52,640. Other top-paying metropolitan areas included Virginia Beach, Virginia; San Francisco; San Jose, California; and Los Angeles.
