Make Cheap Wooden Signs

A good sign can influence the amount of customers you have now and in the future. Making a sign that displays your company's or business's information lets anyone who sees it know who you are and what you do. It enables potential customers to learn about you and contact you. You don't need to spend hundreds of dollars on a fancy, custom-made sign. You can cheaply make your own unique wooden sign.

Instructions

1. Measure and mark a piece of wood to be the size you want your sign to be using a tape measure, straight edge and marking pencil. Make clear, dark lines to use for guidelines when cutting the wood to size. Use thick and durable wood such a 1-inch plywood.

2. Take the wood to your workshop or outside to cut it so that the dust released when you cut is not inhaled by your family members. Wear a mask and eye protection when cutting. Use a circular saw to cut the 1-inch plywood to size. Cut along the lines you made, taking your time to ensure that you stay on the lines.

3. Use a shop vacuum to completely remove all of the dust from the surface of the wood. The paint will not properly adhere to the wood if there is any dust remaining.

4. Use a paint brush and latex paint to paint the entire board the color you want the background of your sign to be. Paint the front side, back side and all of the edges. Painting both sides ensures that your sign will not have an unfinished, unprofessional look. Apply two coats of this color, allowing 1 hour for the first coat to dry before applying the second.

5. Use a second color of latex paint to hand paint or stencil on the information you want the sign to contain. Include your business name, location, phone number and expertise. Draw a sketch of the ideas you have for your sign before attempting to paint it. Allow the sign 24 hours to dry.

6. Apply two coats of polyurethane to your sign, both on the front and back. Do the edges as well as the poly will help to protect the wood and the painted finish by making the sign water resistant. Use a large, soft-bristle paint brush to apply an even coat of polyurethane; allow 2 hours to dry before applying a second coat.

7. Display the sign you have made in front of your business, or wherever it will be seen.
