Gifts For Brand New Dog Proprietors

A new dog owner needs all sorts of items.

If you're shopping for someone who recently got a dog, consider yourself lucky: Dog owners need lots of items, especially if this is their first pet. Many people also love to spoil their pets, so they will enjoy getting items for their dog. Consider buying anything from dog toys to training tools to gift certificates for pet-care services.

Essentials Basket

Fill a basket with all sorts of essentials that new dog owners will need. Choose a retractable leash, a collar, several toys, natural or organic dog treats and a book about raising a dog. You can also select a couple food bowls and a nylon water bowl the owner can take with him on long hikes.

Books

There are lots of books on the market that would be perfect for a new dog owner. Buy her a book with all sorts of facts about her new dog's breed. Find books about ways to house break the dog, or to teach it to fetch and perform other tricks. For dog owners who are handy in a kitchen, you might buy a doggy cookbook; these include all sorts of recipes, from everyday dog meals to birthday cakes.

Grooming Tools

All dogs need some grooming tools, but dogs with long coats need even more. Give the new dog owner items such as a brush for his dog's hair. For a long-haired breed, purchase two brushes---one for everyday combing, and another to loosen tangles and mats. The owner also needs dog shampoo and deodorant spray. Purchase a pair of dog toenail clippers and hair clippers, if the dog will need a trim every now and then. If you want, include a gift certificate for a groomer.

Photography Session

For some people, the addition of a dog to the family is as important as the addition of any other family member. Purchase a photography session for the owner and his dog at a nearby photography studio. That way, the owner will always remember what his dog looked like just after he got him. This is especially fun if the new dog is a puppy, because no one wants to forget that puppy face.

Swimming Pool

Buy the dog owner a plastic or inflatable swimming pool, especially if it's warm outside. This gift is ideal for dogs that love water, such as Labrador retrievers. The owner can fill the pool up with water and let the dog splash around in it. Include some water toys that the dog can fetch.
