Variations Of Fences

Fences have been used throughout history to set boundaries and protect homes from intruders. There have been a number of variations over the years but the essential purpose remains. These different styles all have their own specialized purposes, from protection to aesthetics.

Chain Link

Chain link fencing is a woven mesh of galvanized or coated steel wire. This type of fencing is usually used as a perimeter boundary. Chain link is extremely popular for its comparatively low price and easy installation over other fence types. These fences offer almost full transparency but can be altered with inserts for more privacy.

Classic Picket

The picket fence is most commonly constructed of vertical wood pickets strung along horizontal beams between fence posts. This is a common fence type in suburban areas and is often seen in front yards. The picket fence is usually only two to three feet in height and, therefore, only offers an aesthetic effect to a home rather than a boundary. Throughout history this fence has been built piece by piece, but today, can be found in prefabricated sections at home improvement stores.

Privacy

Privacy fences are used to completely block outside views from a fenced area. These are commonly built from narrow concrete block or a variation of wood panels. In a residential application, these walls separate back yards or private patios. Not only do these fences protect areas from outside eyes, they can also help shield the area from weather conditions like wind.

Electric

The electric fence is composed of electrically charged wires that string along a fence post boundary. The charge is achieved by way of an alternating current that runs through the wires. These fences are used mostly to repeal wildlife intruders from agricultural properties and most only give a minimal electric shock. In some cases, the use of lethal electric shock is permitted; these are most commonly very secure and sensitive areas and should not be tested.

Wrought Iron

The wrought iron fence is similar to the picket fence in that it is most commonly composed of vertical pickets and horizontal members. These fences are manufactured in sections of various lengths to fit any number of applications. The durability and various designs appeal to consumers despite the lack of privacy these fences tend to offer. The lifespan of these fences can usually outlast other fence types due to their metal construction and anti-rust coatings.

Ranch Type

Ranch style fences are built with vertical posts connected by two or three rails; these fences are usually composed of wood but steel and vinyl are also used. The ranch fence is most commonly used in agricultural settings to contain different livestock, but it is not uncommon to see this type of fence used in a residential area.
