Protect your pet on the go with a crate cover.
When traveling with a pet or training your dog or cat to use a crate without being afraid, it's important to make the box as comfortable as possible. It should include soft bedding and a favorite toy inside. However, you can also create a pet crate cover to throw over the top of the crate to protect your pet from debris, noise and lights when traveling.
Instructions
1. Build the crate cover pattern with your brown craft paper.
Build the crate cover pattern with your brown craft paper. Place the edge of the craft paper to the bottom edge of the front of the crate on the door side and tape in place. Roll out the craft paper up the front across the top and down the back, cutting the paper off at the bottom edge of the back of the crate.
2. Trace the shape of the crate onto the brown craft paper.
Trace the shape of the front, top and back of the crate with a marker onto the craft paper. Mark out each section of the paper indicating the front, top and back as well as the tops and bottoms, so you have a reference later when you cut the fabric.
3. Make similar templates for both sides of the crate walls. Attach the paper to the sides and mark out the shapes with a marker. Indicate the right and left sides as well as the top and bottom of the patterns.
4. Attach the paper pattern to your fabric with sewing pins.
Cut out the paper patterns and attach to each other with tape. You will end up with a cross shape. Lay the pattern out on your sheet of fabric. Attach with your sewing pins.
5. Cut the pattern out with scissors.
Cut the pattern out with scissors. Cut one inch away from the edge of the pattern. The one inch will allow for a nice hem around the edges. You should now have a fabric copy of your pattern. Remove the paper and set to the side.
6. Finish the edges by sewing them into place.
Face the wrong side of the fabric to you. Fold the edges of the fabric over one inch and press. Finish the edges by sewing or gluing into place, giving you a clean hem.
7. Place the crate cover onto your crate, letting it lay correctly into place. Cut small holes along the bottom edges of the crate cover. You should have two along the front and back and four on each side.
8. Slip ribbons into the holes and tie down the crate cover to the crate frame.
