Pit bulls need strong, sturdy leashes.
Pit bulls are strong animals. Mature males weigh between 35 and 60 pounds and much of the weight on these agile animals is muscle. Their size, coupled with a natural curiosity and desire to know and see and do everything, makes walking pit bull dogs a test of patience, strength and endurance for their owners. Good leash manners are a matter of training but can't be accomplished without the proper equipment. A leash for a pit bull needs to be strong enough and sturdy enough to endure a fair amount of pulling and tension.
Instructions
1. Cut a piece of nylon webbing to your desired length, plus 18 inches. A four-foot leash allows you more control over the dog and is preferable for walking your pit bull in crowded areas. A six-foot leash allows your dog more room to explore.
2. Light the candle. Hold the cut end of the nylon leash approximately one inch above the flame. Decrease the distance between the flame and the nylon. This melts the end of the nylon, sealing the threads and preventing unraveling. Seal the other cut end in the same manner.
3. Measure six inches down on one end of the nylon webbing. Mark this spot using a permanent marker. Fold the nylon down to form a loop, aligning the cut end of the nylon with the mark.
4. Sew across the nylon, approximately a half-inch from the cut edge. Sew through both pieces of nylon to create a secure loop. Sew a second line of stitches next to the first for extra reinforcement.
5. Position the loop of nylon with both layers aligned, one on top of the other. Place the rivet gun about a quarter inch above the line of stitches. Insert a rivet through both layers of nylon. The rivet adds insurance, making sure the hand-loop does not come undone under heavy pulling.
6. Measure three inches up from the other cut end of the nylon webbing, the end without the loop. Make a mark at this spot. Slide the closed ring of the clip, or snap, over the nylon. Fold the nylon over the clip's ring and line up the cut edge with the mark.
7. Hold the two layers of nylon together. Insert a rivet through both layers of nylon for strength and durability.
8. Stitch over the end of the nylon, creating a parallel double line of stitches as you did to create the hand loop.
9. Cut any loose threads. Double check the cut edges of the nylon for fraying. Run your fingers over the rivet to ensure the backs are flattened to prevent injury to your dog. If sharp edges are present, use a hammer to flatten them.
