Dog owners register with the American Kennel Club (AKC) because it provides proof of ownership and that their dog is purebred. Additionally, with AKC registration, dogs can compete in shows as well as other AKC-sponsored events, like agility trials. The benefits are also far-reaching: by registering their dog, owners support AKC programs such as canine heath and responsible dog ownership. If you have lost your dog's papers, you can get copies from the AKC.
Instructions
Registration Certificate
1. Go to the American Kennel Club Web site and download a Request for Duplicate Registration Certificate.
2. Complete the form, using black ink and capital letters. Use your dog's registered name and registration number. If you do not have your dog's registration number, call the American Kennel Club. A customer service representative will get that information for you.
3. Mail the form and registration fee to the American Kennel Club. As of 2011, the fee is $20 and can be paid by check or credit card information. The American Kennel Club will mail you the Registration Certificate.

4. Contact your dog's breeder and let him know you lost the registration application.
5. Ask him to complete the Duplicate Dog Registration Application form and mail it to the American Kennel Club. The American Kennel Club will send a duplicate form to your breeder.
6. Ask your breeder to send you the form when he receives it.
