Craft Ideas With Raw Wood

Raw wood is only natural for crafting.

Sometimes the roughest pieces of wood make for the most interesting crafts, as they have natural variations of grain, knots and pieces of bark. Without the need for staining, raw wood also saves time and money. Plus, there is no off-gassing from the stain or polyurethane to pollute your indoor air.

Picture Frame

Take four pieces of wood, all the same thickness, two pairs of pieces the same lengths. Sand the pieces for a smoother look, or keep them rough. Some bark adds a rustic element. Miter the corners so the pieces fit snugly, and nail them together with finishing nails.

Curtain Rod

Measure the top of your window. Find a tree branch at least that length. Remove all the branches and knobs that could get in the way when sliding the curtain’s tabs across the branch. Use large metal hooks or loops to attach the branch to the wall.

Side Table

Tree stumps turned into modern, sleek side tables are in fashion. It takes minimal effort to convert the tree stumps. Check your firewood pile for a piece of trunk about 1 to 2 feet in diameter and 18 inches tall. Remove the bark and sand to a soft sheen.
