Breed A Purebred Dog

Registering a puppy is important for owners of purebreds.

Whether you are interested in breeding purebred dogs for fun or for profit, it is important that you do so responsibly. Selecting quality parents, getting your animals the proper care and following the correct registration procedures, are steps that breeders must take to breed their dogs well.

Instructions

1. Choose a breed of dog that you are familiar with and that will qualify for registration in the American Kennel Club (AKC), which oversees the purebred dog registry in the United States. Some dogs sound like purebreds but are actually mixed breeds, such as puggles, which are a cross between a beagle and a pug. These dogs cannot be AKC registered.

2. Select a male and a female adult pure breed that conforms to the breed's standard, has a good temperament and is already AKC registered. It is important to know your dog's strengths and flaws in conformation and temperament, in order to find a mate that will offset your dog's weaknesses. You can find a good quality mate for your dog by searching breed magazines.

3. Take the bitch to the vet, before you breed, to make sure it is healthy and up to date on shots.

4. Schedule the mating once your dog goes into heat. Allow the dogs to mate for as long as they feel comfortable.

5. Revisit the vet to be sure your dog is now pregnant, and get any supplements it will need while pregnant. Prepare a nice-sized box or suitable private, warm area for your dog, so it can give birth in peace.

6. Register the litter with the AKC. The owner or person leasing the mother must register the puppy litter within six months of whelping. This can be done on-line at the AKC website. No individual puppy can be registered without the litter being registered first. It is possible to have a litter considered for registration after six months, but there may be penalties and other requirements from the AKC's board of directors.

7. Register any individual puppy that you keep. If you sell the puppies, the new owners will be able to register their own puppies.
