Careers In Animal Behavior

Pet owners are always seeking assistance from animal trainers.

Careers in animal behavior training sometimes require a degree along with additional training. Qualifications are more strict for jobs working with exotic animals in zoos and sea animals in marine parks. However, becoming a dog trainer may require only on-the-job training.

Horse Trainer

Many horse trainers are also responsible for taking feeding and caring for the horses.

Horse trainers, also called wranglers, teach horses behave and even perform tricks. Trainers can specialize in all techniques or in one particular area of training. For instance, some horse trainers train horses jump or respond to specific verbal commands, and others train horses to perform in races and show competitions. Additional education may be required for horse trainers in some states.

Dog Trainer

Dog trainers can be self-employed or work in pet stores.

Becoming a dog trainer is not difficult. Many large pet shops and animal organizations train people on the job without a degree. Currently, no degrees are available in dog training, but some colleges offer classes or programs in animal behavior. Taking additional classes can help trainers be more effective, because they can learn more specifics about why animals behave a certain way.

Dog trainers teach dogs sit, lie down and avoid jumping on people along with fetching and other skills. Some dog trainers also teach dogs perform tricks.

Exotic and Sea Life Animal Trainer

Animal trainers work with killer whales to teach them basic skills and tricks.

Some animal trainers work with in zoos and zoological water parks. Many parks require trainers to obtain a bachelor's degree in biological sciences in addition to apprenticeship training at the park. Animal trainers work with killer whales, lions, tigers and other animals within the park. Some trainers specifically focus on marine life, and others focus on training animals such as tigers.

Animal trainers are also required to maintain a healthy body weight and optimal physical fitness. The trainers must also adhere to standard safety guidelines and other rules and regulations set in place by the park. Positions are limited and rarely open up, but if you are persistent, you can eventually get on board as a trainer for a zoo or marine life park.
