Cheap Method To Fly Dogs

Taking your canine companion on a flight doesn't have to drain your wallet.

Airplanes are a fact of life for many people. Work obligations, family gatherings and vacations often make it necessary to fly, and people often choose to take pets with them while they travel. Dogs of nearly any breed and size are welcome on most commercial airlines, although it can be costly to travel with a dog. However, there are a number of ways to fly a dog cheaply if you plan ahead.

Instructions

1. Shop around before booking your seat. Different airlines have different policies when it comes to flying dogs, and some may not allow the dog on board at all. Some airlines do not allow bulldog breeds or mixes, so read their pet policies carefully to make sure the dog's breed is not restricted from flights.

2. Book your flight as far in advance as possible. Flights become more expensive as the travel date approaches, so booking at least two weeks in advance will save you money. If possible, book your seat on Wednesdays, as this is the day airlines release the cheapest seats for the upcoming week.

3. Speak with an agent directly rather than booking over the Internet. Ask the agent what the airline's policy is on pets and inform them you will be traveling with a dog. If the dog is small enough, it can be carried onboard with you and counted as one of your free carry-on items. Tell the agent if your dog is a service dog, as airlines are required to let service animals fly for free.

4. Contact a travel agent. Airlines often sell seats to travel companies and allow them to offer deals that the general public does not have access to. Ask the agent if they have any cheap deals available for dog owners traveling with pets.

5. Enlist the services of a pet transportation company. Many pet travel companies charter flights specifically for pet owners and are cheaper than commercial airlines. Pet transportation services are staffed with knowledgeable pet specialists and transport the dog in the cabin rather than a cargo bay, ensuring that the dog arrives safely at your destination.
