Get Licensed To Coach Personal Protection Dogs

Personal protection dogs learn to defend their owners against any threat.

Personal protection dogs (PPDs) have grown in popularity during the 1990s and the early 21st century. With the increase in crime and home invasions, the occupants of a home feel safer if their family dog can do more than simply bark whenever it feels the urge. A number of companies offer fully trained PPDs for sale, and with 2011 prices as high as $35,000 for a top-level trained dog, it's a viable business. Becoming a certified trainer of these dogs requires years of experience and substantial commitment.

Instructions

1. Join a reputable dog training college and take a course in basic obedience training. This is the foundation for any specialized dog training and is offered by a number of colleges around the U.S. The Animal Behavior College in California offers part-time study in which the written work is done online, followed by a part-time practical "externship" that is held in locations across the country.

2. Take the certification exam offered by the Certification Council for Professional Dog Trainers (CCPDT) This certification will establish your credibility as a dog trainer and will be helpful in getting accepted for advanced programs, or finding work as a dog trainer.

3. Join the Association of Pet Dog Trainers (APDT). You will only be accepted once you can prove that you have been certified by the CCPDT. Once you are listed with the association, people looking for certified trainers will be able to see your credentials and contact information.

4. Join a dog training organization such as a Schutzhund club where you can learn the basics of personal protection training. Schutzhund is a sport that includes obedience, tracking and protection work developed specifically for the German shepherd dog. The American Kennel Club offers a list of other dog training clubs around the country.

5. Get your own dog and train it to become a fully qualified personal protection dog. This will enable you to put into practice everything you have learned, and you will also be able to use the dog to demonstrate your ability as a certified trainer.

6. Apply for jobs with companies that train and sell protection dogs, or start your own business training dogs for private owners. You can also offer your services working with dog owners to teach them train their own dogs.
