Open Your Dog Clean

Pet owners with big dogs appreciate dog washes with large accessible tubs.

Dog laundries are growing in popularity, especially the self-service type. Dog owners who don't mind washing their dogs themselves, but would rather not dirty their home bathtubs, make use of dog laundries, where tubs are large and easily accessible and shampoo and drying stations are provided. Opening a dog wash requires business and marketing know-how in conjunction with the purchase and maintenance of utilities and equipment.

Instructions

Opening a Dog Wash

1. Find a good location. Place your business where there is a heavy concentration of dog owners who have the money to spend and an interest in washing their own dogs often enough to make your business viable.

2. Obtain all appropriate licenses and zoning. Make sure animal care is allowed in a commercial building or that a business is allowed in a residential area (if you are opening a dog wash in your garage or outbuilding).

3. Make sure there is adequate water, power and drainage. Once you have chosen your location, have an electrician and plumber inspect the utilities available. Check with your landlord or local Planning Department to insure adequate drainage from multiple bath tubs.

4. Purchase the right equipment, such as large side or rear-entry tubs, steps, hoses, sprayer nozzles, drain plugs, drain strainers, dryers and drying stations, counters, cash registers and ATM systems, literature racks, shelves, buckets, plungers, vacuum cleaners and mops.

5. Create relationships with vendors. You are going to need pet grooming supplies such as shampoo, brushes, combs, towels, eye and ear cleaning materials and nail clippers. To add to your income, stock other dog-related items like toys, clothing, hair accessories, treats, and commercial or homeopathic flea and tick control treatments.

6. Market your business to dog owners in the area. Put up flyers in dog parks, pet stores and vet offices. Create a website with keywords that attract local dog owners. Offer discount coupons or run contests to attract customers. Network at dog clubs, shows, agility and obedience competitions; on Dogster, Facebook and Twitter; and at other locations where dog owners congregate.
