Avoid The Thievery Of The Bulldog

Keep a collar on your bulldog at all times.

English and French bulldogs are well known for their gentle temperaments, companionship and loyalty. They are especially protective of children. While your bulldog may make a good guard dog, it is also vulnerable to pet theft. Thieves often sell animals to research facilities. They also steal bulldogs to breed or they may steal the puppies to sell. Thieves may be less likely to steal neutered bulldogs, according to Thames Valley Police. Take measures to keep your pet safe. Keep photos of it to post at animal shelters and around the neighborhood in case it goes missing.

Instructions

1. Provide a fenced enclosure for your bulldog outdoors. Only let it outside when you are home and can keep an eye on it.

2. Keep your bulldog leashed during walks. Avoid walking the same route at the same time every day. Varying your route makes it less likely for someone to steal your bulldog during a walk.

3. Take your bulldog to the vet and have a microchip implanted. In the event your bulldog is stolen, the microchip proves your ownership.

4. Find new homes for your bulldog puppies cautiously, if you are a breeder. French bulldog puppies often sell for about $3,000, as of 2010, according to The Orange County Register. This is an incentive for thieves to respond to ads for puppies, visit the residence and then steal the dogs.

5. Avoid showing new puppies when you are alone at home. Always have at least one other person there to discourage theft.

6. Install security cameras over the exterior doors of your home. These can help the police find your bulldog if it is stolen. Security cameras also discourage the theft from occurring at all.
