House Break A Rat Terrier

Rat terriers are independent-minded and often unwilling to take commands, which can make potty training difficult. They are territorial dogs prone to marking. Terriers are clever and know when they can get away with something without obeying orders; thus, you must be firm and patient when potty training.

Instructions

1. Use puppy pads indoors until the dog is consistent in going outside. Like any other dog, rat terriers are not born knowing to eliminate outside.

2. Be consistent. Fifteen minutes after the dog has eaten, had something to drink or awakened, take him outside. Spend as much time as it takes.

3. Take the dog to a designated area in your yard. Terriers tend to run and play. Keep him on a leash, unless you have a fenced yard where he can't run to the neighbors or out onto the street.

4. Kennel him at night. Dogs are den animals and won't relieve themselves where they sleep. Putting your terrier in a crate at night helps her learn to hold it longer. First thing in the morning, let her outside immediately. Carry her, or she may eliminate on the way to the door.

5. Reward your terrier with treats when he goes potty outside.
