A coat stand, or a standing coat rack, can be a useful solution for people who don't want to jam coats into hall closets or let them hang against a wall and dirty it over time. A coat stand can be a challenging project for a wood worker, and it does require that you have certain tools, including a jigsaw, sand paper and a drill to name a few. However, with the proper instructions, you can make a handsome addition for your home.
Instructions
1. Make the legs. Take an 18-inch length piece of 5/4x6 oak and draw the shape of the leg on it. Start by drawing a 4-inch long by 1-inch wide notch at the upper left hand corner of the board. Make the 2-inch wide foot of the leg on the lower right hand corner. Sketch the contoured form, or use the template available from the listed reference. Cut the leg out using a jigsaw, and sand off any remaining pencil marks on the leg. Do this four times to make the four legs for the coat stand.
2. Drill two holes in the top of each leg. Attach the first leg to the bottom of the 58-inch newel post by centering the leg on the post, setting the post into the notch and then screwing the leg in with two 2 1/2-inch deck screws. Repeat this step for the other three legs.
3. Paint or stain the wood so that it's the color you want. Allow the paint to dry along the entirety of the newel post, including the legs and the post itself. Once the paint or stain is dry, attach coat hooks to the top square of the newel post using screws. Vary the heights of the hooks to maximize hanging space.
