Create A Dachshund Sweater From Old Socks

Supplement your dachshund's natural coat with a cozy winter sweater.

Recycle an old sock to create a custom sweater to keep your dachshund warm and fashionable during cold winter months. Find a large sock that will not restrict your dachshund's movement during walks. If no one in your family wears large socks, peruse the socks for sale at your local second-hand store. Before you begin making the sweater, wash and dry the sock. Stop by your local craft store to pick up decorations for your sock sweater.

Instructions

1. Find a large sock from your sock drawer. Inspect the sock for holes and feel the fabric to make sure the sock is in good condition. Don't worry if the sock is plain or unattractive. You can decorate the sock to your taste later.

2. Lay the sock on a flat surface. Remove the elasticized top of the sock with scissors. Discard the elasticized top.

3. Fold over the heel of the sock and make at least a 1-inch incision at the heel into both layers of fabric. Your dog's forelegs will slip through the holes at the heel. Adjust the size of the holes later as necessary.

4. Locate the seam by the toe of the sock. Cut off the toe of the sock above the seam. Set the toe section aside to be used as a hat.

5. Slip the sock sweater onto your dachshund to adjust the fit. Slide the sock over your dog's head. Next, gently guide your dog's front legs into the two holes by the heel of the sock.

6. Check the underside of your dog. Make sure there is at least a 3-inch space between the sock sweater and your dog's bottom to safeguard against your dachshund soiling the sweater. Trim the sock if necessary.

7. Make a matching hat with the toe of the sock. Fold the toe section in half lengthwise. Use scissors to cut a 1-inch slit into both layers of fabric. Unfold the section and adjust the slits to fit over your dog's ears.

8. Place the toe section on your dog's head and slip the ears through the slits. Adjust the size again to ensure the hat rests comfortably on your dachshund's head.

9. Remove hat and sweater from your dachshund.

10. Decorate the hat and sweater with a hot glue gun and decorations to your taste. Use bows, rhinestones and cutouts of other fabric to embellish your old sock. Buy fabric markers to draw designs on your sock sweater and hat. Allow the glue to dry completely before putting the sweater and hat on your dog.
