Have A Dog Happy Inside A Crate

Dog crates are useful for both you and your dog. They help with house training, keep dogs safe during travel, and serve as a way to comfortably retain the pooch when needed. Dog crates come in both mesh and wire varieties, and you should choose one that fits your breed. Opt for a crate that is durable enough to withstand any chewing, and make sure the slats are close enough that your pet cannot get his nose stuck between them. Being in a crate should make a dog feel cozy, safe and happy.

Instructions

1. Pick the right size crate. Choose a crate that is large enough for your dog to fully stand erect and fully extend while lying down.

2. Put the crate in an ideal location. Pick a central location where the dog will not feel like she is isolated or missing out on any action when she's in the crate.

3. Furnish the crate. Fill the crate with dog supplies, including a towel, blanket or dog bed; a water source, such as an outside water bottle, if he'll be in his crate for an extended time; and a few of his favorite dog toys. Pick toys that are durable and cannot be chewed up or choked on in your absence.

4. Get your dog interested in the crate and reward her for her interest. Play games revolving around the crate, such as tossing her toys into the crate and having her fetch them. Hide treats inside the crate so she'll associate the crate with a fine place to be. Praise the pooch when she enters and remains in the crate, but always leave the door open until she's very comfortable with the crate so she does not feel trapped.

5. Extend your dog's crate time as he becomes more and more comfortable in it. Get your dog used to the crate by shutting him in it while you're still around the house. Slowly extend his crate time by leaving him for short amounts of time before returning. Work your dog up to longer and longer periods of time until he stays in his crate, content, for as long as needed.
