Be A Fitness Expert Around Australia

The market for personal trainers has exploded in recent years.

Unlike the United States, where certification requirements are a hodgepodge of local, state and employer mandates and suggestions, Australia's national government requires two levels of certification to become a personal trainer. There are numerous schools in Australia offering personal-training courses, all with an eye toward you earning your two certificates. The government-run Technical and Further Education of South Australia (TAFE SA) estimates the current salary range for personal trainers in Australia to be $25,000 to $30,000, and that the industry is growing rapidly.

Instructions

1. Obtain your high school ("secondary" school or "college" in some areas) diploma. Most personal trainer certification schools require a high school diploma to enroll.

2. Research the different personal trainer educational opportunities. Courses are offered through for-fee training school, universities and TAFE SA. Courses range in duration from six weeks to 18 months and can be conducted one-on-one, in small or large groups and through correspondence and online courses. Read program descriptions carefully. Some courses may advertise themselves as personal trainer courses but don't provide Certificate III and IV qualifications. For example, they may offer Certificate I or II qualifications, which basically qualify you to work in a local recreation department. A short TAFE fitness course--at low or no cost--may help you decide if the personal trainer field is for you.

3. Enroll in a Certificate III training class, which is the entry-level qualification required for employment in Australia's fitness industry. A Certificate III allows an instructor to assess and write programs, teach exercise classes, conduct health screenings and assist people in their gym routines. It's also the prerequisite for Certificate IV qualification. Depending on how much time you spend on studying the lectures series (usually offered online), the training will take three to six weeks to complete. Costs range from free (with TAFE financial aid) to $500.

4. Complete and pass your Certificate III exam.

5. Enroll in a Certificate IV class. Obtaining a Certificate IV is the minimum requirement for becoming a personal trainer. Although some instructors have been "grandfathered" in, a Certificate IV now is required to obtain insurance coverage within the industry. Again, depending on whether you study full- or part-time, the course will take four to eight weeks to complete. Costs range from free (with TAFE financial aid) to $700.

6. Take and pass your Certificate IV exam. There are online study aids available.
