There are different schools of thought concerning the best food for Rottweiler puppies.
Rottweilers are a large work breed, therefore it is important to properly feed puppies so they can reach their adult potential. Many types of dog and puppy foods are available, including those produced by the major pet food companies and from smaller, lesser-known manufacturers. Looking at the ingredients and determining what is and isn't good for puppies is the first step in determining the best food to feed your Rottweiler puppy.
Commercial Dog Food
Available commercial dog foods have varying degrees of quality and nutritional value. According to "Feeding Healthy Natural Dog Food," by Michele Welton on Your Pure Bred Puppy's site, check for: USDA inspection; that the first two ingredients are meat and the food contains no corn, soybeans, by-products or animal digest. Puppies have difficulty digesting corn and soy. The Official Rottweiler Guide site suggests Nature Diet and Nature's Menu. The guide also suggest feeding Rottweiler puppies adult dog food from the beginning. Silver Hill Rottweilers of Apex, N.C. suggests using Eukanuba Large Breed Puppy food.
Homemade Dog Food
Both the Official Rottweiler Guide and Your Pure Bred Puppy recommend feeding Rottweiler puppies natural fresh food, including: beef, turkey, chicken, fresh vegetables, eggs, fish, cottage cheese. According to the article, "Feeding Homemade Dog Food by Michele Welton; veterinarian Dr. Martin Goldstein states, "You can boost your pet's health profoundly by making one simple decision. All you have to do is change his diet from commercial-brand fare to something you may never have imagined giving him -- real food. The fresh food you buy at the market for yourself is the food you should give your pet, too."
Balanced Nutrition
Feeding Rottweiler puppies a balanced diet is essential for the dog's long-term health and growth. Although meat is preferred, giving Rottweilers a vegetarian diet is healthy and provide the necessary balance of protein and other dietary needs. The Official Rottweiler Guide, suggests feeding the Rottweiler an "equal amount of meat and cereal, slightly less vegetables along with bread, animal oil and salt."
Feeding Rottweiler Puppies
According to "Feeding Your Puppy" on Gundogs Online, puppies normally eat smaller portions than adult dogs, usually three times a day. Sometimes they eat heavily, while other times they don't. This is natural and normal, even when they eat something that disagrees with them and they vomit. Due to a puppy's sensitive stomach, a natural and well-balanced diet is the best thing to feed Rottweiler puppies.
