What Exactly Are Top Schools In Iowa

Iowa has several highly ranked colleges.


Iowa is home to several highly ranked colleges, including four schools ranked among the nation's top 100 liberal arts colleges by "U.S. News & World Report" magazine in 2010. These colleges, many of which were founded in the 19th century, continue to focus on undergraduate education and prepare students for further education and future employment in a wide variety of academic and professional fields.


Grinnell College


Grinnell College is a private liberal arts college that was founded in 1846. As of 2009, the school had about 1,650 undergraduates. The college offers 28 academic majors within its three primary divisions, including the humanities division, social studies division and science division. The school also offers 12 interdisciplinary majors and concentrations. Grinnel students can apply to work with a faculty member on a research project called a Mentored Advanced Project (MAP). Students can complete more than one MAP during their undergraduate years. "U.S. News & World Report" magazine ranked Grinnell College 14th in its 2010 ranking of liberal arts colleges.

Cornell College


Cornell College, a private, liberal arts college, was founded in 1853. As of 2009, the school had about 1,200 students. The college follows a nontraditional block schedule known as the One Course at a Time system. This system enables students to focus on one class for three and a half weeks before moving on to a new class.


Students can choose from among 35 academic majors and 25 minors, as well as 11 preprofessional programs, including pre-architecture, prelaw, premedicine and pre-education. In 2010, "U.S. News & World Report" magazine ranked Cornell College 85th among liberal arts colleges.

Luther College


Norwegian immigrants founded Luther College in 1861. As of 2009, the school had about 2,500 students. Luther College remains affiliated with the Evangelical Lutheran Church. Luther students can work toward the Bachelor of Arts degree with a major or minor in 45 different academic fields. The school also offers preprofessional programs in 11 fields, including arts management, law, engineering, medicine and pharmacy. Luther College ranked 89th in "U.S. News & World Report" magazine's 2010 liberal arts college ranking.
