Get My Horse'S Registration Papers

All things being equal, registered purebreds are more valuable than unregistered horses.


Registration papers prove that a horse is a purebred member of a particular breed, such as an Arabian or a Quarter Horse. Sometimes these papers are lost, destroyed or kept by the seller for professional or sentimental reasons. (When you buy a registered horse, insist that the horse be identified by its registration number in the sales contract.) Here is obtain duplicate original papers for two of the most popular breeds of horse in America: Arabians and Quarter Horses.


Instructions


Arabians


1. Go to the Arabian Horse Association (AHA) at Arabianhorses.org. Download and print the Duplicate Certificate Request and Affidavit form from the "Registration" tab.


2. Fill out the Duplicate Certificate Request and Affidavit. It requires a complete description of your horse, including whether or not your horse has pink skin under any white markings.


3. Sign the Duplicate Certificate Request and Affidavit before a notary public.


4. Return the completed Affidavit to:

Include (as of May 2011) $25 if you are an Association member and $50 if you are not. Send a check or money order, rather than cash.


If you are selling the horse, include a copy of the sales contract and an additional fee. This fee will range from $15 if the buyer is a member who purchased the horse within a month, to $75 if the buyer is a non-member who purchased the horse more than six months ago.


Quarter Horses


5. Contact the American Quarter Horse Association (AQHA) at aqha.com and download the Affidavit for Duplicate Certificate from the "Resources Center." If you are requesting records as part of a sale, also download and print out a Transfer Report.


6. Fill out the Affidavit for Duplicate Certificate. You must sign this certificate, too, before a notary. If you are requesting duplicate records as part of a sale, also fill out the Transfer form, which does not need to be notarized.


7. Return the completed form with four color photos (left and right sides, front and rear) to:

Include (as of May 2011) $25 if you are an Association member and $60 if you are not. You may send a check, money order or provide your credit card information.


If you are including the Transfer form, include an additional $15 if the purchaser is a member of the AQHA and $55 if not.
