Photography Jobs Within The Animal Area

Many options are open to photography with animals.

A love of animals combined with photography leads to many different career paths. Working for studios, magazines, companies or zoos are all possible for you if pursuing a career in wildlife or animal photography. Jobs are competitive but rewarding once gained.

Pet Photographer

Pet photographers either work for an established studio or design their own and cater to families and pet owners wishing to have portraits and family photos with their beloved animals. Pet photographers need to be nimble as many photos require getting on all fours to go face to face with the pet. Pay rates are typically determined by sitting fees and selling additional prints and photos from the shoot. One pet photographer reports charging $350 for each session.

ASPCA/Shelters

Shelters and animal adoption agencies such as the ASPCA or local shelters often rely on Internet-based websites to promote the pets needing homes at their kennels and shelters. They rely on photographers to shoot photos to upload onto the web so these furry friends may find new homes and families. While the pay may be meager, it is a method of growing your portfolio while giving service to animal adoption agencies.

Wildlife Photographer

Being in the right place at the right time isn't always the most successful method for achieving the elusive shots of wildlife to sell in galleries or magazines. Wildlife photographers often place themselves in the same spot for extended periods to ensure getting those photos. Be prepared to spend weeks to months traveling to far-off lands, investing in gear and learning market your work. Wildlife photographers often open their own galleries to sell and promote their work, publish coffee table books or sell photos to magazines.
