The Very Best Family Protection Breed Of Dogs

Even just the presense of a Great Dane can deter predators.

The best family protection dog breed varies greatly depending on the individual needs of each family. Some dog breeds have a natural inclination to protect their owners as past generations protected their pack. Loyal, non-aggressive dogs are the best for families because these breeds can learn guard without turning on their owners.

Rottweilers

Rottweilers are happy and energetic, making them great for families.

Rottweilers might not seem like family dogs, but when trained properly, these dogs are actually very loyal to their owners. The American Kennel Club says, "Rottweilers are calm, courageous dogs that have an strong desire to protect their homes and family." Always buy or adopt a Rottweiler as a puppy so you can train your dog early on. If you adopt an older Rottweiler, you are taking a risk by not knowing the dog's history. Keep in mind these dogs are naturally aggressive toward other dogs, but can be trained to get along with them.

Doberman Pinschers

Dobermans are elegant and sleek, yet watchful.

A Doberman pinscher serves as an excellent family protection dog because of its watchful eye and unwavering loyalty to its owner. These dogs have acute hearing and senses, making them a top choice for law enforcement. When properly trained, a Doberman also makes an ideal family guard dog. These dogs are also strong and athletic, so kids and parents can enjoy playing catch or chasing their canine in the yard. Dobermans are sleek, weighing only 60 to 100 pounds on average. Males are on the heavier side, but weight also depends on the dog's individual bone structure.

Great Danes

Be patient when working with Great Danes.

According to "Good Housekeeping Magazine," Great Danes are excellent for kids because they are alert guard dogs, yet not overly aggressive. Generally quite large and tall, Great Danes easily make their presence known to anyone that might want to harm your family. Great Danes can weigh 105 to 170 pounds, and males are generally larger. Great Danes can be difficult to train, but once trained, these dogs make loyal family companions.
