Obtain A California Assistance Dog Tag

If you live in California and require the assistance of a dog you may be eligible to apply for the assistance dog tag at your local animal control center. Coming at no extra cost, this tag gives your dog access to all the public places you will need him or her the most.

Instructions

1. Check if your dog falls under the category of service dog. A service dog is defined as a dog that has been trained to help a person with a mental or physical disability. If you have any doubts please visit the SPCA link in the resources section below.

2. Take all the required documentation to your nearest animal control center and fill out their application for an assistance dog tag. There is a link to a directory for animal control centers in the Resources section below.

3. Be prepared to answer any questions they may have about your dog and the tasks he or she performs for you.

4. Read the affidavit they will give you carefully before signing it. Falsely applying for an assistance dog tag is a misdemeanor punishable by imprisonment.
