Housetrain A Labrador Retriever

Labrador Retriever - Kara

Intelligent, playful and spirited, Labrador Retrievers are one of the most popular breeds in America. Labs make excellent pets as well as work or field dogs. Originally from Newfoundland, Labrador Retrievers helped fishermen pull in nets and catch escaping fish. They are still known for their abilities to retrieve game, and they love the water. Like any dog, the first step after bring one home is house training.

Instructions

1. Establish where you want your Labrador Retriever to urinate or defecate. This area will most likely be in a gated backyard attached to the house.

2. Take your Labrador Retriever to the area you selected every 45 minutes so he can do his business. It is especially important to take him out after eating or drinking, playtime, and after waking up.

3. Praise your Lab enthusiastically if she does go in the toilet area you choose. This is very important. Don't scold for not going or for having an accident; a puppy especially won't understand, and this may set back training.

4. Confine your Labrador to an area of the house or crate and keep it lined with paper. This makes accidents easy to clean up and will reinforce the distinction between the toilet area and the rest of the house.

5. Continue taking your Lab out every 45 minutes or so and keep praising when he does what you want. He will soon understand what is expected of him, but it may take until your Lab reaches 6 months to gain full control of his bladder and bowels. Be consistent and patient.
