Training dogs can be a rewarding job and remunerative job, with many trainers making $17 or more an hour. Trainers typically work in a variety of settings including animal shelters and large pets stores. Although some dog trainers learn their trade on the job, many employers prefer to hire someone with some formal training. If you're interested in becoming a dog trainer, you can choose from a number of programs and schools.
Triple Crown Academy
Triple Crown Academy, on 350 acres in Hutto, Texas, combines hands-on experience with classroom instruction in dog training. Instruction covers obedience, behavior modification and personal protection and leads to a certification in dog training. As of July 2010, tuition for a four-week program is $5,545 and $7,545 for an eight-week program. Qualifying students can receive financial aid through Sallie Mae. The academy offers on-site housing.

The Tom Rose School
The Tom Rose School, St. Louis, Missouri, has been in operation for more than 35 years. It teaches a variety of dog training techniques and prepares students to become certified dog trainers. The school bases its tests for graduation on rules of the American Kennel Club, the National Narcotic Detector Dog Association and other organizations. Programs for those with no experience in dog training, include the associate and professional dog trainer programs, and graduate programs for those completed the undergrad program, include master and guide dog programs. Advanced graduates who have already completed an undergraduate and graduate training program can take the advanced master program. As of the July of 2010, tuition for the 16- to-20-week undergraduate programs is $11,995. Master trainer program tuition is $4,990 and the program is 12 weeks. Guide dog training students pay $6,990 for a 20-week program. The 50-week advanced training program costs $3,990.

Animal Behavior College
Animal Behavior College is a California-based school that offers training throughout the country. Founded in 1998 by Steven Applebaum, owner and president of the Animal Behavior and Training Associates, it offers training in all Petco stores in the United States and in Petcetera outlets in Canada. Training includes an 11-step curriculum that gives students a foundation in the basics of dog training, obedience and safety. As of July 2010, tuition in the U.S. is from $2,915 to $3,670. Canadian students pay $2,960 to $3,715. Financial assistance is available for those who qualify.
